If you are a Commonwealth citizen with a grandparent who was born in the UK, including the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man, you can apply for a UK visa in this category. This would enable you to stay in UK for 5 years and give you a full-range work permit. The claim to ancestry is relevant even in case of adoption of your parent or you in relation with your grandparent.

Eligibility criteria

  • Commonwealth citizenship
  • One of the grandparents born in UK
  • Age limit – 17 and above
  • Proof of funds to support yourself and your dependants without the help of the state

Qualifying details of the grandparent

The grandparent must have been born in any one of the following circumstances:

  • in the UK, including the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man
  • before 31 March 1922 in the present Republic of Ireland
  • on a British ship or aircraft

Documents to be provided:

  • your authentic birth certificate
  • the authentic birth certificates and marriage certificates of the parents and grandparents your ancestry claim is based on
  • legal adoption papers, in case you or your parents are adopted

Dependants:

Your spouse and your child/ children can accompany you to UK, if proper documents of family relations, including a marriage certificate or a civil relationship registration certificate, is furnished.
