Private treatment

If you wish to visit the UK for the sole intention of having private medical treatment in the UK, you can apply for the visa in this category. You can also adopt this route if you wish to donate an organ to a patient under private medical care. The duration of this visa is for a maximum period of 6-11months based on the nature of your treatment.

However, this visa comes in with numerous restrictions on the activities of the applicant when he/ she is in UK. The applicant cannot:

  • extend his stay in UK or make frequent visits
  • indulge in any kind of work or business
  • get public funds
  • join any educational institution
  • marry or register a civil partnership, or give notice of marriage or civil partnership
  • come to the UK to become surrogate mother
  • donate an organ to someone undergoing NHS treatment. Such a visitor will have to apply for a General Visa
  • bring along dependants. They must apply separately for the visa.

Eligibility criteria

The applicant must:

  • have a medical condition which needs private consultation or treatment in the UK to be cured
  • have arranged for consultations or treatment or have paid for the same
  • have enough resources to fund his treatment, his stay and his return to his native country without using public funds
  • leave the UK after the termination of the treatment or expiration of the visa
  • not pose danger to public health in UK if he is suffering from an infectious disease like leprosy or tuberculosis
  • not be in transit to a country outside the UK, Ireland, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands

Documents required:

The documents to be furnished are as follows:

  • a current passport or other valid travel identification
  • a passport size colour photograph
  • bank statements or payslips as a proof of your savings to support your treatment and stay in UK
  • details of your stay and your travel plans

Your doctor is also required to provide a document with the details of the hospital in order to validate the medical condition of the applicant. The document must include:

  • your medical condition or ailment
  • the proposed treatment
  • number of consultations that will take place
  • the envisaged duration of the treatment
  • cost of the treatment
  • the current stage at which the treatment is
